2023 Silver Lake Award Celebration will honor Whendi Cook-Broderick April 16

March 22, 2023

Congratulations to Whendi Cook Broderick, the 2023 Silver Lake Award honoree!

The Silver Lake Award recognizes someone whose life has been visibly shaped by the core values of Silver Lake Camp & Retreat Center and who, in turn, lives their life and faith in a way that reflects the formative experiences they have had at Silver Lake. This person truly takes Silver Lake home with them beyond Low Road. The 2023 celebration takes place on Sunday April 16, 2-5 pm at Farmington Gardens in Farmington, CT.

Whendi Cook Brodrick has been a summer Dean at Silver Lake for decades. She also has served on Silver Lake’s summer staff and has spent many years as a leader of Silver Lake’s spring Women’s Yoga & Music Spirit Retreat - happening this year, May 5-7, 2023.

Whendi’s nominators wrote eloquently of Wendi's deep roots at Silver Lake, love for Silver Lake, and teaching the core values of Silver Lake beyond Low Rd.

“You might say Whendi is three generations of the Silver Lake experience in one person. A product of Silver Lake in a deeper way than most – commitment and immersion from formative through college and adult years – Whendi fully embodies Silver Lake Core Values”

“It is clear when working with Whendi that her spiritual generosity generally places others first. I observed this firsthand many times as her co-dean in planning for the individual children joining our conference. Many kids have unique physical, psychological and social needs and it is often tempting to meet those needs in the simplest and most compassionate way possible. Whendi’s voice in these conversations is the one that, correctly, changes that order to prioritize compassion over simplicity. She knows that we are not just accommodating our challenged students, we are welcoming them – and we are called to do so extravagantly.”

“Whendi lives out her Silver Lake values in everything she does. And Whendi’s life is lived out in service. I know from conversations with Whendi and her friends that Whendi’s work in this world is a ministry. And that it reaches across the map. As an educator of students from the world far beyond Silver Lake, she teaches her content in the context of Silver Lake values of justice and inclusion. Her students go forth as seeds, bringing those values back to their communities.”

The Silver Lake Award Celebration will also recognize contributions to Silver Lake’s ministry from individuals and churches.

At its heart, The Silver Lake Award Celebration is a celebration!

Silver Lake Director, Rev. David Camphouse says, “Remember that one counselor whose staff show highlight you still talk about? Did you have a camp best friend you still count on? How about that Dean of that amazing session you had when you felt so close to God? Are you ready to relive all those great Silver Lake memories? The Silver Lake award is designed to help you do all that and more. We honor the best among us who have been beacons of God's love and hope in the world. The Silver Lake award brings together those friends, those shared stories, and an opportunity to pay it forward to another group of Silver Lakers. This amazing fundraiser gathers the memories, the memory makers, food, drinks, and some items of nostalgia - which you can take home for the right price.”

As Rev. Camphouse points out, the event is a fundraiser for Silver Lake’s transformative outdoor ministry programs. There will be a live and silent auction, and an opportunity to donate directly to Silver Lake’s summer camper scholarship fund.
